Garbo Hearne, a well-known artist and gallery owner in Little Rock, will be honored with the Arts Community Development Award at the 2024 Governor’s Arts Awards. This event, hosted by the Arkansas Arts Council, will take place on March 8 in Little Rock.
Hearne is one of eight recipients to be recognized at the ceremony. Other awardees include Virmarie DePoyster, a North Little Rock artist, who will receive the Arts in Education Award. General Mills in Rogers will be honored with the Corporate Sponsorship of the Arts Award, while Pam Setser, a folk musician and singer from Mountain View, will receive the Folklife Award. Stephen Driver, a potter from Ozark, will be recognized with the Individual Artist Award. Gay Bechtelheimer, an artist, curator, and art educator from El Dorado, will receive the Judges Recognition Award. Tony Waller, vice president of constituent relations and racial equity for Walmart in Bentonville, will be honored with the Patron Award. Finally, Charley Sandage, a storyteller, songwriter, and historian from Mountain View, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Governor’s Arts Awards have been recognizing outstanding contributions to the arts in Arkansas since 1991. The recipients are chosen through a public nomination process and selected by an independent panel of arts professionals.
