Matthew Broderick Pays Heartfelt Tribute to James Earl Jones: ‘My Father, My King!’

Matthew Broderick has paid a touching tribute to his Lion King co-star James Earl Jones, following the legendary actor’s passing on September 9 at the age of 93. Reflecting on their unique bond, both on and off-screen, Broderick expressed deep gratitude for the chance to work with Jones, who famously voiced Mufasa in the beloved 1994 animated film.

“I’m incredibly fortunate to have worked with James Earl Jones,” Broderick shared in an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE. “He wasn’t just my father on screen, he was my king. To have had the opportunity to get to know him, even just a little, was such a gift. Every time we crossed paths over the years, I was always overjoyed to see him.”

Broderick, who voiced Simba, the son of Jones’ iconic character Mufasa, spoke fondly of Jones’ warmth and humility, recalling his broad smile, infectious laughter, and genuine interest in others. “He was so open, so curious about those around him,” Broderick said. “Despite that powerful voice, he was far from intimidating—he was a fantastic listener. His performance in Fences might be my personal favorite, but his entire career is filled with so many outstanding roles that it’s nearly impossible to choose just one.”

Broderick described Jones as “one of the greatest actors of his generation—or any generation. A truly magnificent American actor.”

Remembering James Earl Jones’ Impact

James Earl Jones, a towering figure in both theater and film, has left an indelible mark on countless audiences. His portrayal of Mufasa in The Lion King has become synonymous with fatherhood for an entire generation. “His depiction of Mufasa was absolute perfection,” said Lion King co-director Rob Minkoff. “He taught a generation what it means to be a father. I’m certain his powerful voice will continue to echo in homes everywhere, keeping his spirit alive for many years to come. He lives on in all of us.”

Jones’ impact extended far beyond The Lion King. He also famously voiced Darth Vader in Star Wars, a role that Disney CEO Bob Iger noted as one of “the greatest characters in cinema history.”

In a statement, Iger praised Jones as “a celebrated stage actor with nearly 200 film and television credits to his name. The stories he brought to life, with a uniquely commanding presence and richness of spirit, have left an indelible impression on generations of audiences. On behalf of everyone at Disney, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.”

Fans, colleagues, and co-stars, including Jim Cummings, who voiced Ed the hyena in The Lion King, have also been paying their respects. Cummings shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, posting a photo of Jones and a clip of the cast recording in the studio.
