The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources is trying to change the association between junk and Christmas with an upcoming “Junk Christmas Tree” workshop. The workshop, set for Saturday, December 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the AMNR State Park in Smackover, will allow participants to use various bric-abrac such as nuts and bolts, broken or discarded jewelry, and small toys to create a one-of-a-kind holiday decoration.
According to AMNR director Jonathan Plant, participants will be provided with canvas, paint, and hot glue to craft their own trees, and they can also bring their own junk to make their tree unique. A small selection of junk will also be on hand at the workshop for decoration purposes.
The workshop is a family-friendly event, with a cost of $10 per person or $15 per parent-and-child. However, space is limited so reservations must be made in advance by calling the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources at 870-725-2877.
The museum is located at 4087 Smackover Hwy 7 in Smackover, Arkansas, and operating hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition to the workshop, the museum also has its annual Holiday Light Extravaganza ongoing on Fridays and Saturdays. The light show features festive holiday scenes on a 1/4 mile walk along museum grounds, beginning at 5:30 p.m. each night.
Admission to the light show is $10 per vehicle, and holographic light glasses to see holiday shapes in the lights are $2 each. On Saturdays December 9 and December 16, Santa Claus will be available inside the museum for holiday photos, with admission to the light event also required to access the museum and visit Santa.
In addition, on Friday, December 8, the Smackover-Norphlet Buckaroo Choir will perform a 30-minute a cappella concert in the museum’s Oil Field Park at 6:30 p.m. The choir, led by Daniel Clar, includes both junior high and high school students.
